The Preferred Coalition Partner for the ANC
This report investigates voter preferences for which party the ANC should seek to build a coalition with if it were to lose its national majority in South Africa’s 2024 elections.
The data is based on a survey of 1 412 geographically and demographically representative registered voters commissioned by the Foundation in October 2023. That survey had a national margin of error of 5%. Totals may not add up to 100% where rounding has occurred or where participants refused to answer a question.

Tentative Conclusions
The data shows that a plurality of registered voters thought that the DA should be the ANC’s first choice for a coalition partner, followed by the EFF and then the IFP. Amongst black voters there was a plurality in favour of the EFF, closely followed by the DA. Amongst ANC voters the DA was the first choice, followed by the EFF and then the IFP.
