The Importance Of Freedom Of Speech To South Africans
This report investigates how important freedom of speech is perceived to be by South Africans. The data in the report comes from a survey of 805 demographically and geographically representative participants conducted telephonically by the Foundation in April 2025. That survey had a margin of error of 5%. Totals may not add up to 100% where respondents refused to answer a question.

TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS
The data indicates that the right to free speech is important to over 90% of South Africans. This finding holds true across lines of race, home language, highest level of education and party affiliation.
