The Extent Of Anti-Immigrant Prejudice in The Western Cape.
This report investigates the perceptions of registered voters in the Western around the entry of black immigrants to the Western Cape from the rest of the country. The data in the report comes from a July 2023 Foundation survey. The survey was conducted telephonically amongst a sample of 2 590 geographically and demographically representative registered voters in the Western Cape. The survey has a provincial margin of error of 2.9%. Totals will not add up to 100% where rounding has occurred or where respondents could not answer a question.
Recently, Freedom Front Plus MPL Peter Marais said that black South Africans were not indigenous to the Western Cape and were therefore foreigners who were making life difficult for Coloured people 'who now had to compete against numerically superior African blacks whose influx to the Western Cape has changed the demographics (of the province)'. Do you agree or do you disagree with Mr Marais' statement?

Tentative Conclusions
The data establishes that there is considerable prejudice directed at black South Africans who have immigrated to the Western Cape. The prejudice most likely arises from competition for jobs and resources and is broadly held across race groups and socio-economic strata in the Western Cape. In the Foundation’s opinion this prejudice mirrors that directed at African immigrants who enter South Africa from the rest of the continent in search of jobs and better opportunities. As with such xenophobic prejudice, the prejudice directed at black South African immigrants to the Western Cape risks sparking violence and instability.
